Neither of us took any pictures during this time, so you get random past Halloween photos instead.
I promise we won't chronicle every date, but the first few were very critical in the development of our relationship.
I had some weird health stuff pop up during my sophomore year at BYU. Among other things, I was frequently severely dizzy, shaky, and numb in various places. I went to several doctors and none were successful in diagnosing it so I learned to live with it. During the summer, most of the symptoms went away and I thought it was gone. A couple weeks before Blake and I began dating I got sick, donated blood, and ran a race with my mom (we actually took 2nd or 3rd place in the parent/child team division!). Somewhere in all that, my symptoms came back. Things were really bad the day of our second date. I think I tried to go for a run that morning and had to stop because of the dizziness. I was really frustrated to see it all come back because it was very unpleasant and interfered with both running and playing the piano—my two favorite hobbies and stress relievers.
As Blake mentioned, on our second date we went to a Divine Comedy performance the next Saturday. Blake's roommate Cody took my friend Caralee. She and I have been friends since we were babies, so we always had a lot of fun together. The show was very entertaining, as always. Despite my grumpiness, I was still quite interested in Blake and made sure to keep my hand available, just in case he wanted to hold it. He didn't. But it was only the second date, so it wasn't a big deal.
After the show we went back to the boys' apartment for some hot cocoa and conversation. I think it was at this point that my bad mood reared its ugly head. It wasn't anything over the top, it just wasn't helpful in trying to win Blake's affection. I think I was just sarcastic. The only thing I remember specifically was when Blake went off about his Beatles poster hanging on the wall. The poster shows all of their albums with their release dates. He was pointing out how incredibly fast they put some of the albums out. After his whole enthusiastic shpeal, my response was, "Fascinating," said as sarcastically as possible. I felt horrible about it as soon as it was out of my mouth, but it was already said. I don't really remember how that date ended, I just remember I felt yucky about my behavior and I really wanted to apologize to Blake.
So, I tried to talk to him immediately following Ward Prayer the next day. Unfortunately, shortly after I found him and began a conversation, someone else walked up and began talking and he turned his focus on them. This exact same scenario happened THREE TIMES!! I was feeling pretty dejected, but I wasn't ready to give up. Jimmy lived across the hall from Blake so I decided to walk back with Jimmy and wait for him there. While we were waiting, Jimmy and I got to talking about how we were both ready to find a serious relationship with someone and maybe think about marriage. After almost forever, Blake finally showed up. I asked him if I could talk to him for a moment and he agreed. But before I could even begin, his roommate opened their door and told him he had a phone call. Aargh!!! So, I told him to go ahead and take it and that we could just talk the next day when I brought him a cinnamon roll. I was making cinnamon rolls and had promised to bring him one (it was kind of like a peace offering since I felt I hadn't been very nice).

Well, I woke up the next morning feeling like maybe I wasn't all that interested in Blake, if he was just going to blow me off the way he had the night before. But I did still owe him a cinnamon roll. I planned on baking them in the evening and taking one by later that night. Then Jimmy called me that afternoon to ask if I knew of anyone he could take to see "The Scarlet Pimpernel." He totally knew that was my favorite musical (at the time). His date couldn't go last minute, so he needed a replacement. I quickly suggested myself. He reminded me that I was supposed to be volunteering at the MTC. But I was more than willing to skip it for a musical. So, we went to Thanksgiving Point. It was AMAZING. And it was after 10 PM by the time I got home. But the cinnamon rolls were sitting in my fridge begging to be baked, and this was college so the night was still young. I baked the cinnamon rolls, frosted them, and took one over to Blake.
This conversation went really well. I apologized and he said he hadn't thought anything of my attitude the night before and seemed quite surprised by the apology. So, I gathered up all my nerves and invited him to come with me to my friend's ballet later that week. And he never responded. He just talked about something else. I had never asked a guy on a date before (besides asking boyfriends to a girl's choice dance), so that was incredibly difficult for me. I tried to follow the conversation while desperately trying to determine in my mind if he hadn't heard me, or if that was just his way of letting me down nicely. And in total contrast to my normal self, I asked him again. This time he said "yes".
The Second Date
In a continuation of my journal dated November 24, 2002 I didn't have too much to say about my date with Cheryl. But I did have something to say about what led up to the next date.

"On Saturday we went to the football game and BYU lost to NM. Yikes! We really are bad this year. The date with Cheryl after the game went really well though. On Monday Cheryl brought by a cinnamon roll because she thought she was "grumpy" on the date. I honestly thought she was going to tell me that she didn't want to go out anymore. Phew! Well, I asked her to have a football party with us for the big U game. She said she could, but that she would be going to a ballet that night. Later my mom asked me to baby sit Friday night and Saturday afternoon while she and dad went on a cruise to the Caribbean. When Cheryl dropped by on Tuesday I told her I couldn't make it to the party, but had she already bought tickets for the ballet? We decided we would go together. I saw Cheryl again on Wednesday night and then we hung out together at the Enrichment activity (we went to an assisted living center and recorded favorite Christmas stories). Wow, 4 nights in a row!"

I really don't remember Cheryl being ornery on the 2nd date. I was, after all, just getting to know her. I did feel a little stung by her comments about The Beatles, but it was water off my back. She didn't give off a stuck-up impression and one little comment wasn't the end of the world. It must have been my insecurity that made me think she wanted to end it with me. Maybe because I really liked her and wasn't sure if she liked me. The night of ward prayer I kind of avoided her and talked to other people. I think I just wanted to show that I was desirable. No girl had ever told me to stop contacting her so I'm not sure why I thought she would want to call it off.
The next day I expected the inevitable and waited for a while. I even was napping in bed until late at night wondering if she had decided to not come at all. When she finally showed up things started looking up again, although I remember things a little differently – I asked her out first
This is the only photo we got the year Blake dressed as a pregnant woman (to break the news of my pregnancy with Bryce). He looked great--and he totally got busted for cross dressing at our ward party!

Please Help!
Does anyone know how to get Vicks Vapor Rub (or Vaseline) out of hair and clothing?
I spent the afternoon cleaning out the pumpkins so we could have a fun evening of carving/painting them and then making and eating caramel apples and still get the kids to bed on time. I went upstairs to tell the kids that Daddy was on his way home, just before starting dinner. As soon as I got to the stairs I noticed a very strong menthol smell and then I saw the kids. Bryce was one ball of grease. Kayli had smeared an entire tub of Vicks Baby Rub all through his hair and face and shirt. They also got it on the carpet and a bunch of their toys.
The first step was, of course, to call the pediatrician since Bryce had it caked in his eyelashes and kept blinking hard. Then poison control, per the pediatrician's instructions. Then a shower, per PC's instructions, to gently flush his eyes. Kayli was locked in her room so I couldn't do to her what I was sorely tempted to do. I scraped a ton of the rub out with my fingernails and washed his hair 3 or 4 times, but it is still disgusting! And they are supposed to have pictures taken on Wednesday!
It's also on both of their shirts and I would like to salvage those. I read that Dawn works. Does anyone know if it has to be Dawn, or if I can use a different brand?
So, you can probably bet that we didn't carve pumpkins or make caramel apples tonight. Hopefully, there will be time another night this week.
And to answer a few questions that are totally unrelated, but I keep forgetting to answer.
1. Yes, I made their costumes. But I couldn't have done it without my mom's help. She helped me find a great resource on-line, provided the felt for the circles, wrote "Thing 1" & "Thing 2" (that would have been IMPOSSIBLE for me. Seriously.), and was a great sounding board as I tried to figure out how to make the hats/wigs. Thanks, Mom! They were made using old tights and feather boas. The red part is just simple sweats. And thanks, Everyone, for making me feel like all the hard work was worth it!
2. Since my triathlon I took a couple months off and just did easy workouts. Then I went through a strength phase, focusing mainly on resistance training. Now I'm working on my base training phase. I've got a few more training phases to go through over the next 6 months and then hope to do several triathlons next summer. I don't know when my first will be or how many "several" really is. However many my body is up for, I guess. And our bank account, as it's kind of a pricey sport.
3. I don't know. I really don't like either candidate.
4. Yes, you are all welcome to come visit any time.

Halloween '08
Well, I finally got the Halloween pics of the kids on-line. So, here they are. I wasn't exactly thrilled with them and the kids didn't really cooperate either. Hopefully, things will go better at the upcoming photo session this week!

Let the Mischief Begin
Last night was Blake's Annual Office Halloween Party. We really enjoy it every year because it's the only family function and it's fun for the kids to see where their daddy works. Although, sometimes I wonder if Kayli thinks that he goes to a party every day after seeing the offices all decorated. The kids dress up in costume and then go "trick-or-treat" to decorated offices. Each office has a different theme. They go all out and it's pretty cute. This year I dressed the kids up as Thing 1 & Thing 2 from The Cat in the Hat. The costumes were a lot more work than I anticipated, but the reaction from everyone last night made it worth the effort.

What a Wednesday
The First Date
So, after the football game Saturday night, I made a quick stop at my apartment to make sure I was looking date-worthy and then Blake came to pick me up. We went bowling with a couple of his roommates and their dates. It was a lot of fun. Except that I was very nervous. This was the first time I ever felt nervous on a first date. I was blessed with a lot of confidence and always felt certain that my dates had asked me out because they were interested in me. Things were different now though.
The year before I met Blake was a crazy one as far as dating went. The firs semester I was dating a guy very seriously (he brought up love and marriage about four week after we met!) I got caught up in the excitement of that for a little while but when he actually wanted to set a date, I freaked out. That was the beginning of the end of that relationship. Only a few days after our messy break-up, a guy that I thought was just a friend asked me out. That was the beginning of a really crazy dating time for me. I averaged about three dates a week during a lot of the second semester. They were nice guys, for the most part, but most only made me appreciate my missionary more. So, by the time I went home for the summer, I was beyond sick of dating and more than ready to just wait for my missionary. So, as I already mentioned, I did my best to avoid the attention of guys.
Flash back to my date with Blake. Now I was afraid that I had come off sort of spinsterly and that Blake had asked me out as a pity date. I knew he and his roommates went out every weekend and I worried that he just felt bad for me. So, I felt this irrational need for him to know that other guys had in fact been interested in me. And I talked about all of them. A lot. And you thought things couldn’t get any more awkward for me, didn’t you?
Back to the bowling. Despite my nerves and my desire to inform Blake of my desirability, I had a lot of fun. It was an enjoyable group and Blake has always had a way of making just about anything fun. Blake got the overall high score and I got the overall low score. Sadly, my score was low enough that our combined score was lower than the other two couples’. So, Blake had to buy the ice cream for everyone on the way home. We ate ice cream and then played Catch Phrase. Anyone who knows me knows that I come from a long line of competitive women when it comes to game playing. Well, no one in that group knew that about me, and I think I took everyone, including Blake, by surprise by getting a little bit upset with one of his roommates on the opposing team.
As we were parting ways at my door Blake did something no guy had ever done to me before. He asked me for a hug. I willingly gave him one, thinking that was both sweet and a little weird. Then he said, “Maybe we could do this again sometime.” My smooth reply was an enthusiastic, “I’d love to!” Yeah, way to play it cool.
After he left, I stressed over whether or not he was as interested in me as I was in him. Amazingly enough he gave me reason to hope over the next few days and even asked me out for the following weekend.
I shared all my feelings with my sister Amy. I told her about my unnatural nervousness and how bothered I was by my behavior. She half-jokingly told me that it was a good sign. She ended up marrying the first guy that she wasn’t nervous around, so maybe I would marry the first guy I was nervous with. I wasn’t ready to look that far in the future yet. I just knew I was falling for this cute and thoughtful young man who was great at making me laugh.
Who knew something so small could get me so fired up?The First Date
I just found this cool journal entry that I made on November 24, 2002. I thought I would include to give my true perspective.
“Well, there is a new girl that I really do like. Her name is Cheryl and she is originally from Albuquerque, NM. Her family recently moved to a small town about an hour and a half from NYC. Coincidentally, Cheryl is the same girl who walked out on Heather and me at 4:45 a.m. Yeah, how ironic!
Cheryl is just such a neat person; I feel so happy when Iʼm around her. She makes others feel special and needed. We also do have some things in common. We both acted in high school and we both love music. Cheryl also loves to run and play the piano.
Anyway, I always thought she was going out with someone until recently. I just happened to start talking to her at ward prayer and I found that she was really fun. The next weekend was Preference, but I didnʼt have any plans for Saturday. I decided to go out on a limb and ask her to do something on Saturday. I called her up and asked her. She said yes and we continued to have a nice chat for another 30 minutes or so. Sweetness! We werenʼt sure on the details so I called her the next night to confirm. Once again we had a really good talk.
Well, I picked Cheryl up after the football game on Saturday and we went bowling. Cody had asked Brittany from W36. Dave Stankeweicz came along with Vanessa (W16). We had a really good time. Afterward, we bought some ice cream and came back to the apartment to play Catch Phrase. I had a really fun time.
Sunday was sweet ʽcause I talked to Cheryl after ward prayer for nearly an hour. Later that week Cheryl came over with some pictures and I showed her some of my Operation Smile photos. I also asked her if she wanted to go out on Saturday to Divine Comedy.”
Just a little more detail on our first date, which was on November 9, 2002. BYU won the game 35-31 vs. Wyoming, a good omen. We went bowling at a place called Miracle Bowl in Orem, another good omen. I think Cheryl was pretty impressed with my athletic bowling abilities. She had a funny bowling approach that involved several tip toe steps right before the line. I thought it was pretty cute. We did lose, though, by having the lowest combined bowling score. That costs me a couple bucks in ice cream for everybody.
We went back to my place to play games, but one of my roommates wanted to watch a movie. I was impressed when Cheryl offered to let everybody come over to her house to play. Her roommates were watching TV, but we were able to have a fun game of Catchphrase. Cheryl was pretty competitive, but I found it to be a good quality. When it was finally time to go, asking for a hug just seemed like the right thing to do. I’ve done it before and always had a good response. I went home feeling that our date went well and intending to ask Cheryl out again, which I did the following week.

Pumpkin Patches

Very festive

I had to take advantage of this rare snuggly moment with Kayli. She was trying to get a better look at the scarecrows hanging from trees along the path to the pumpkin patch as we rode past.
I was going to make the rule that they had to be able to carry what they chose, but we got there and all the pumpkins were huge. Bryce still tried to pick up several, getting very cranky when he couldn't. We were pretty disappointed with the selection, actually. Not very many pumpkins and even fewer with the stem still attached. But we found one to our liking and then headed over to pick some delicious apples.
Kayli had the most fun finding nasty worms and random dried up pumpkin stems all over the ground
We picked up a smaller pumpkin for Bryce at the store where we paid for everything. Then Kayli wanted to get a little tiny pumpkin. Blake took her back out to try to find one a little bigger and she came back with the smallest pumpkin I've ever seen. She was really proud of it too. Unfortunately, its stem didn't survive the drive home.
Who doesn't walk around with their newly found pumpkin while reading a book? We'll be lucky if the pumpkins survive the next week or so until we carve them. That train on Kayli's finger was a little prize on a cupcake at Stew Leonard's the week before that. She wears it everywhere and all the time. Miraculously, she hasn't lost it yet!
And you thought you had a ghetto booty

Really, You Don't Have To Do That.
Kayli seems to eat more cereal in the morning now. She loves this!
Bryce is the master of funny and bizaare faces. This is just one of many.
Wow. These are some pretty big shoes to fill!
Okay, now it's leaf time. The kids and I took a two hour bike ride to get them, so you better enjoy them! (It's part of my training, but still!)

This is what I love about small children. They're enthusiasm never dwindles. You'd think he never saw a stick before!
Don't miss the smile on Kayli's face as she gathers leaves to throw at her brother!

Remember this sweet picture that so many of you commented on? I tried to replicate it.
This was the best I got. Bryce is not peacefully lounging, like it looks. He's throwing a tantrum over being asked to sit in his sister's lap. Ahh... my sweet children.
Kayli's kind of obsessed with mushrooms. And why not, they're gross, like so many of her obsessions. She found this gnarly one down by the water. I thought it was pretty cool.

Wicked Wonderful Wednesday
I didn't like "Way Back Wednesday", so I'm trying something new. It may have a new title each week, we'll see. But it's still our story.
First, some back up photos from last week:

And of course, Nathan The missionary. This was one of our first dates Freshman year. It had a 70's theme, but I was the only one in our group who dressed the part. Really cool. And later in that same entry: “I thought it was strange that in the blessing Dad gave me when he was here a couple weeks ago, he blessed me to know who I would marry…But maybe that decision will come up in the next few months. I hope it doesn’t. Why can’t I just be single forever?” Hmmm... interesting.
We happened to bump into each other in between classes at church the following Sunday and we had a really great talk. My roommates helped me get all psyched up to ask him out after Ward Prayer that night (kind of like a family prayer with all the people in our two buildings). There was always a Linger Longer in someone’s apartment after, so I made sure to catch his attention and we had a very long chat. And I experienced something new for me—being nervous around a guy. I kept saying the most unbelievable things. As soon as they exited my mouth I wanted to take them back, but I just kept right on going. The two that really stand out were 1. Upon learning that he wanted to live in the East, I VERY emphatically told him it was a bad idea. But I think I ended up telling him just to not move to New York. (My parents had recently moved there and had a string of bad experiences). Yeah. I still laugh about that one when people ask why we moved to the East Coast. And 2. I told him I want to donate my body to science when I die. Wait, what?! Yeah, I really said that. And then I proceeded to explain to him all the abnormalities I possessed that would make my body interesting to science.
So, I didn’t ask him out that night. I just went home and cringed. I actually really enjoyed talking to him when I wasn’t being a moron. He was very interesting and funny and did I mention, extremely good looking? Talking to him was always a bit of a challenge because he was constantly surrounded by a circle of girls, kind of like groupies. I usually avoided guys like that because who wants to compete? But I just kept adding to the list of things that went way against my typical dating habits.
Then Wednesday evening I got a phone call. From Blake. He asked me if I was going to Preference that weekend. I laughed, thinking he was going to ask me, and told him “no”. Then he asked if I wanted to go out with him after the football game on Saturday night. I, of course, said yes. Then we chatted for about 45 minutes and I fared much better over the phone.

Things You Might Do If You Were Anti-Dating With Cheryl

Things fizzled out with Heather over the next month or so. School was in full swing and I was very busy. I had just been accepted into the Jr. Core for accounting, which is a very demanding and competitive curriculum. I still tried to go out with a girl once a week, but I was looking for somebody to date more seriously. And school was drastically hampering my social life.
Following our embarrassing encounter outside her apartment door, I didn’t see much of Cheryl. Occasionally, I would walk over to the W building in our complex and pass her and James sitting on the grass talking. James lived across the hall and I figured they must be dating as they always seemed to be together. I remember feeling a tinge of disappointment because I had thought she was cute, but I didn’t dwell on it.
Around this time my brother Brandon decided to come down and stay with me for a weekend. Brandon was a student at the U and I was eager to show him what things were like at the Y. I can’t remember most of his stay, but I do remember that I took him with me to church at the SWKT (Spencer W Kimball Tower). Following Sunday School, the hallways were pretty crowded and somehow Brandon struck up a conversation with another ward member. They ended up talking for an extended period of time so I, not really part of the conversation, turned around to see if I could start talking to anybody. That’s when Cheryl and her roommate Linsey walked up. We just started talking. I looked forward to ward prayer that night and talking to Cheryl some more.
Ward prayer is essentially a spiritual thought and funny program/skit/game by an apartment that is focused on helping other people get to know them. And then the best parts: socializing and treats. It was always a high point of my week and a time to socialize without the guilt that I should be studying. Even if I happened to be up in Kamas for the weekend, I would leave to be back in time for the event.
Cheryl and I started talking and she did say some weird things about donating her body to science. I thought it was odd, but was still attracted to her and wanted to get to know her better. Another girl had asked me out for preference on Friday night and part of me suspected Cheryl wanted to ask me out as well for Saturday. I remember Linsey even making the comment that Cheryl still needed to find a date. I was a little confused because I thought she still might be dating somebody, although she hadn’t acted as if she were. Later that evening I checked with some of my friends who roomed with James and they let me know the two were just good friends.
After our long talk I really wanted to ask her out and soon. The dilemma was that Preference was the upcoming weekend. How could I ask a girl out on Preference weekend? Finally, I decided that since I didn’t have a date for Saturday night I would just call and ask if she wanted to do something after the football game. I called her from work and the phone call went really well. We were set for our first date!
And last but not least, it being that time of year. Here are some fun pictures of Blake and I on Halloween shortly before all this began.
And I just realized this is from a prior Halloween. He went as a long-haired caveman (I think), the year we met.
My roomies and I decided to be really creative and go as cowgirls. You wouldn't believe how long it took to get all those ringlets in.

Leaves are Falling All Around
This is a Photo Tag from my sister-in-law. Feel free to tag yourself. Post the fourth photo from the fourth folder. I made teriyaki noodle bowl for dinner one night and Kayli wanted to join in the chopstick fun. Not that I would go back, but looking at this makes me miss that little baby.
Bryce injured his finger a couple weeks ago. Well, he injures fingers almost daily, but this one was a little worse. The photo doesn't show it very well, but it was the best I could get. You can tell that the middle fingernail looks kind of dirty. That's what I first thought when I saw it. But when I pulled it closer to clean it, I discovered that the dirt was really crusted puss and ooze. Nasty! And the fingernail was actually raised off of the finger. Nastier! So, we made a quick trip down to my pediatrician's. Incidentally, I LOVE my pediatrician. I cannot imagine a better doctor. So, the finger is infected and the nail is only attached at the base. Every now and then he tries to pull it off. I clipped it down as far as I could so it doesn't look as bad. But it still kind of makes my skin crawl.
This is how Bryce rides in the car when he's not rocking out the radio. I think it's funny how chill he looks.
Sunday evening we tried to go leaf peeping, but we got away too late. We got a couple decent photos before it got too dark. We're going to try again this weekend in full daylight, so hopefully we'll get some better pics.
I love how the leaves look reflected on the water. And the really nice weather we've been enjoying--no jackets!
This "pond" is right by our house. I can't believe how big a body of water can be and still be called a pond. This is a lake when you're from the desert.
We found this on the ground by the pond. I don't drink, but I do know that champagne isn't supposed to come in a can. We thought this was kind of funny.
