My friend Laura was in town with her husband and beautiful daughter, so we met at the Olive Garden for lunch. Our families have been friends pretty much forever as we've all moved from Utah to New Mexico to New York. We're kind of like cousins. So, it was great to see her and spend an afternoon together.

Happy Birthday, Mom!
It's my mom's birthday today. I think she's turning 29, or something. My mom is one of the greatest blessings in my life. She is awesome! And she's one of my best friends. People often tell me that I'm a lot like her and I am so flattered because I admire her so much.
I dubbed her "The Queen of Integrity" when I was in high school. So, here she is with her crown. Actually, this was taken at the flagship store for Yankee Candle up in Springfield, MA. But I think it suits her well. We love you, Mom!And just so you don't think all we eat around here are cakes and treats, I wanted to share some delightful salads that we have invented. Well, maybe someone else has made them before, but we invented them for our family. We've been using spinach for them because Kayli loves fresh spinach--who knew? But you can use whatever salad greens you favor.

Happy Easter!
I don't remember if I wrote this in a previous post, but Bryce took his first two steps in church on Sunday March 16th. Just making sure he "walked" before his birthday, I guess.
Anyway, we had a wonderful and relaxed Easter. I hope you all had a great one too. Saturday night as we were getting all the new outfits ready for Sunday, we decided Bryce needed a clean hair cut to go with his snazzy suit. What do you think?
This is the best photo I was able to get. Sad.
Bryce really likes this holiday. We made the mistake of leaving him alone with the basket for a minute. Take one look at that gleam in his eye and you can guess what happened.
We had this for dessert. It is the chocolate version of Strawberry Shortcake. It's delicious. Last year I made a Strawberry Swirl Cake. This year's cake was so much yummier. And I decided to make it a tradition to try a new strawberry cake every Easter. If I remember, of course.Posted by Cheryl at 2:25 PM 7 comments

A Mother's Wisdom
This is a four-generation photo taken at Kayli's baby blessing. I'm lucky to be related to some pretty incredible women, like my mom and grandma, in this picture. My mom sends out emails to my siblings and me with the latest happenings, useful information, and her thoughts and testimony. This morning she shared somethings she's recently read. I believe the following comes from the book, Happy For No Reason. It's paraphrased and quoted by my mom with some of her insights. I really liked it and thought I should share it with those of you who don't have the fortune of receiving my mother's emails.
The book suggests 3 guiding principles to live by. They are:
1. What expands you makes you happier.
2. The universe is out to support you.
3. What you appreciate, appreciates.
A lot of what I read under #2 reminds me of you -
"Einstein once said that the most important question a person can ask himself is
"Is this a friendly universe?" Rather than thinking the universe is out to get them, they believe the universe is out to support them.
What's striking is that they don't believe the universe is benevolent only when good things happen to them - they take this approach all the time. When something bad occurs, they don't moan and groan, "Why me? It's not fair." They see all the events in their lives through the lens of "Ultimately this is happening for my good. There are no mistakes. Let me look for the blessing in this." This belief in a friendly universe is the root of their relaxed and trusting attitude in life.
This may be a hard concept for you to swallow. Certainly there are many horrible things that happen in this world... It's easy to think that we don't live in a friendly universe. The one thing that's helped me embrace the idea that the universe is always out to support me is the knowledge that all the wise men and women who've ever lived have shared this belief. So when I'm having a hard time seeing how the universe is supporting me in a particular situation, I'm willing to admit that my thinking and understanding may be limited and to remind myself of their enlightened and clearer vision."
As I read, I substituted my knowledge of my Heavenly Father and his Son who know each of us personally and love us unconditionally. Isn't it wonderful to have access to ALL the truth through the gift of the Holy Ghost!
Thanks, Mom!

Happy Birthday, Bryce!
Bryce's birthday was on Monday. I completely forgot it was St. Patrick's Day for the first half of the day. Sad, because I've always enjoyed the randomness of St. Patty's Day. Can you believe my baby is 1?! It feels like only about six months have passed. But I just set up my brackets for March Madness, so it really has been a full year. And we celebrated in style! As of last week, I had spent $1 on four train pieces for his birthday. I couldn't figure out what to get him. But I found a little T-ball toy and the grandparents came through with some fun toys as well, so he ended up having more than enough. Not that he even cared.
Getting ready to open presents--Kayli had already begun opening them for him and it was difficult to get her to stop even though she had watched me wrap them and knew what was inside each gift!
He was a little slow, tearing off one tiny piece of paper at a time, but he got it done. Or Kayli jumped in and helped out.
Licking the beater from the frosting earlier in the day.
And then it hit me, that what he ALWAYS wants to do, is whatever Kayli is doing. So, I made a "Kayli Cake".
Honestly, I'm pretty proud of my work. It has a couple things that I really don't like, but overall, it's better than I expected from myself. Of course, it wouldn't have turned out as well without the advice I got from my mom as I worked on it. She's a lot more experienced at this sort of thing.
Kayli was pretty delighted to have a cake that looked like her.
And Bryce was a fan as well!
Last Saturday we participated in an "Easter Apple Hunt" at Lyman Orchards. It was FREEZING but a lot of fun anyway.
We got to meet the Easter Bunny.
Kayli couldn't leave these poor little guys in their cages. She had a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure they did not.
Here she is searching for apples--before she slipped and fell and got mud all over her backside and before the mud sucked one shoe right off her foot. She tried hopping on the other foot until I could fix things, but still ended up sticking her shoe-less foot in the mud. Poor kid. She did get several apples. I thought they might not be very good after all they went through, but they are actually quite tasty.
How lucky am I? What a handsome pair!

Can I Please Have a Little Spring?
Well, the kids have been sick off and on (thanks to the allergies, these things start to go away but then just linger on and on) and we've pretty much stayed home the last week and a half. You would think that would give me more time for things like blogging, but I've actually been busier. Because now I have to workout at home while the kids nap. Nap time is my only free time, so you see the conflict. But I've discovered that I kind of blog my life in my head. It's kind of like I chronicle our daily events as I go along. I don't mean to, it just happens. I even woke up from a dream the other night and realized I'd been doing it in my dream. Weird. I'm not sure I can handle this whole blogging thing. Maybe it's being shut off from the world. It's been kind of boring and we're all going stir-crazy.
Before the kids got sick we did a couple fun things. One day we met some friends to play at the mall. It has a great play center, but is unfortunately, 30 minutes away so we don't get there very often. Of course, this may be where the kids picked up their bug, so maybe that is a good thing.
Bryce kept climbing to the top of these stairs and just sitting there. That was fine as long as it was vacant like this, but he was right in the way of any other child trying to play.
Kayli always makes new friends wherever we go. Here they are in a little row boat.
Bryce kept playing peek-a-boo over the side of this little barrel.
My friend's daughter Riley. She is adorable. We got to take care of her one evening last week and she was so sweet and quiet. I don't know what it's like to have a quiet child.
Kayli's make-shift slide. A little bumpy.
It snowed again. This time Blake was home so we put Bryce down for a nap and then made a snowman together. It was kind of warm, so he melted quite a bit that day. It's too bad I didn't get a picture of how he looked by the end of the day. Suffice it to say, it looked like he was "leaning".Blake also makes dinner most Sundays. A couple Sundays ago he made yummy calzones. Bryce climbed up on our little step stool to supervise and help when needed.
You can't really see the smile that was on Bryce's face. But I love this picture.
And to sneak a bit of the dough too.
Blake and I are Cub Scout leaders for our ward. We just had the Blue & Gold Banquet, celebrating the birthday of scouting. Neither of us really knew what we were doing (although, I don't really understand Blake's excuse for that since he is an Eagle Scout, for crying out loud!), so it was a bit of a challenge to prepare for it. Fortunately, the boys helped write a really cute skit. The theme was "Cub Scouts in the Future", so it involved a day trip to Mars, the death of their scout leader by an asteroid wound, aliens, and Mars Cub Scout Traps (think Venus Fly Trap). We also had to make dessert for 125 people and design the center pieces for our tables. As much as I wish I were, I am not artsy. So, don't laugh at this next photo.
It's suppose to be a tent on the moon. Blake made the aliens. I didn't really get any good photos from the dinner, sorry!
Being sick is not holding Bryce back too much. He is getting ready to walk in time for his birthday, possibly. Here he is standing. A few days ago he covered and then uncovered his eyes and said, "Boo!" But he hasn't done it again since, so I'm not sure if it was just a fluke. We'll see.
Look at that cute belly!
I promise we don't really let our children stand on the table. I don't remember why we did this time...
Bryce always does this with his tongue. I hear that many adults can't roll their tongues. Blake can't even do it. We are so proud that he has mastered this skill at such a young age.
So, this was a very long and rambling post. Now you all know what happens when I'm kept away from adult conversation and interaction for too long. And left blogging inside my head. So, let's all pray that the kids really are over their cold/allergies today, so we can get outside of the house and be with people tomorrow.
